When working with Stewart, Nelson says nothing is ever “too planned” and the pair usually just “roll with it” in terms of the beauty look for that night. “Kristen likes to look a little rock ‘n’ roll, and [her V-neck Diane von Furstenberg romper] felt like it would work to do something like this,” he tells PEOPLE.
So how he’d get the rocker-esque look without going full-on raccoon eyes? Don’t go kohl liner crazy, he says. “We kept this quite close to the lash line and didn’t go all the way up to the crease of the eye and beyond,” Nelson says. “If you keep the color concentrated at the lash line and blend it well, it won’t be too much.”
To nail the look, Nelson used M.A.C Kohl Power Eye Pencil in Feline around her eyes and on the waterline, and then smudged the liner in with a brush. The makeup pro added a slight shimmer with a metallic maroon eye shadow (NARS Dual-Intensity Eye Shadow in Subra). (Pro tip: Nelson recommends using a shimmery shadow — in any color of your choice — to soften the look so the liner doesn’t look too harsh.)
And since Stewart isn’t a big fan of lipstick, Nelson says, the pro opted to keep the star’s lip neutral with a few swipes of tinted lip balm.
